Big Party coming up!

GORE MOUNTAIN SKI CLUB NEW YEAR'S EVE BASH

Dear Ski Club, Emeritus friends, and NYSEF coaches,

Looking for a great time with old friends and new....  Come to the 5th annual Gore Mountain Ski Club Dinner Dance at the Inn on Gore Mountain on Friday, December 31st, 2010.  Guaranteed good eats, drinks, and music!!!

The event starts at 7pm with cocktail hour (cash bar)
8pm Dinner
9:30pm The Upsiders, with our very own Steve Gaechter, will entertain you and the dance floor will be hopping
Midnight Champagne Toast (included in per person cost)
Band plays until 12:30am ish

This year's menu (YUMMO!!):

Stuffed Salmon
Stuffed Pork
Lemon Chicken
Pasta Prima w/veggies

Scalloped Potato
Salad Bread
Coffee Tea Soda
Desserts

and cash bar

The cost this year is $65 per person.  At this point we are asking for $40 per person for NYSEF employees.   We would like to further discount the cost to our coaches in recognition of their support of our children while perhaps making the event more accessible for them in term of expense.  We can only do that with your generosity.  So, if you would like to sponsor a coach (or even part of a coach), it would be much appreciated.

Please give either Tanya Gaechter (in the NYSEF building) or Nadine Slemp  (in the lodge) your money -- checks made out to Gore Mountain Ski Club.  Tanya's in the NYSEF office this weekend and Nadine will be at Gore this Sunday.  We will both be around all Christmas week.  We'd appreciate it if you could pay ahead so we're not collecting a bunch of money at the dinner dance.

That night, please be sure and thank the Inn's owners for their gracious hospitality throughout the years -- Sue and Rich Mannuci.

And be sure to thank Steve and Tanya Gaechter for Steve donating his musical talents and both playing host to the band while in North Creek!!!  We are delighted to have such a talented group of musicians play for this event!

Thanks all!   Looking forward to an unbelievable night!!  Hope to see you there!!!!

This weekend at Gore

Well folks, it has been colder then…….well colder then something that is really, really cold this week and the Gore snowmaking crew has been hard at work putting down a whole lot of snow this week. Ole Mother Nature helped out a bit as well, as she provided a few inches to the top of the hill.

So, this weekend the J4's have a parent meeting Saturday afternoon and the J3's have a parent meeting Sunday afternoon. Check in with those coaches for exact times.

The JI II group will be at their first races of the year this Saturday up at Whiteface. The weather looks perfect and I hear that conditions will be fine, so good luck to everyone!

Our first races at Gore are this coming Monday and Tuesday. We still need some volunteers for the event. Remember that nothing say's happy holiday more then volunteering for a NYSEF event!

The J5 race schedule has been posted on the NYSEF website. Take a look if you like.

The Holiday week training schedule is Sunday December 26 – Friday December 31st at noon. There is no training December 24 & 25th and January 1st. The building will be open though, if you want to come inside for something.

Gore Ski Club

Happy Thanksgiving to all Gore Ski Club  Families and Friends!

We truly have so much to be thankful for...it is ok to say it out loud and take a moment in thanks..

Back at the hill, the snow making equipment is in full operation at Gore, now that the weather is cooperating.

Saturday is opening day and the Slemp Family will be there early to enjoy the first turns of the new season (Well, it will be the first turns for me, anyway! ).  The NYSEF Training Center will be open for NYSEF kids to pick up your pass.

Regular season NYSEF training is scheduled to begin on Saturday December 4th at 8:30AM.  Both Saturday 12/4 and Sunday 12/5 will be half days as the NYSEF staff will have their annual staff meetings in the afternoon both days.  Please continue to check Bone's blogs for any updates...   http://gorenysef.blogspot.com

If you haven't already done so, please complete your annual club membership form attached and send it off to Linda Feist as noted on the bottom of the form!  Thanks to those that have already paid their dues!!!

As far as the easy fundraising opportunity for Gore Ski Club, it goes something like this...

Many of you will be producing Christmas Cards, Holiday cards, photo memory books, photo calenders and other photo related items as gifts this holiday season.

Pinhole press (www.pinholepress.com),  a producer of the highest quality photo cards, photo books, etc, will support a fundraising effort for our club and will giving back a little to you, as well, when you use www.pinholepress.com to produce your photo related projects this holiday season.

Pinhole is the real deal to produce top quality photo products - see some reviews here:  http://alphamom.com/family-fun/personalized-photo-notepads-for-holiday-gift-giving/ ; http://ohjoy.blogs.com/my_weblog/2010/10/love-these.html ; http://www.dailycandy.com/kids/online/article/92187/Pinhole-Press-Online-Photo-Boutique or you can friend Pinhole Press on facebook to stay up to date.

Here is the deal: Go to www.pinholepress.com, upload your photos to create photo cards, photo books, etc.  Use the discount code GoreSkiClub  at check out and you will receive a 5% discount for yourself on all items purchased (before shipping & taxes) AND
you will earn 10% of the purchase price as a contribution to the Gore Ski Club.  Anyone/everyone can use the discount code, so pass it along to all of your friends and family!

Bone has identified that money earned from this fundraising effort will go to upgrade the office equipment in the Gore Race Center, starting with an upgraded copier. And we all can remember times waiting for stapled copies of start lists and run orders from the current set up.  Note, no disrespect to Kelly & Tanya intended.  So that is a good choice by Bone.....

Thank you  and see you on the slopes!

Craig and Nadine Slemp

(For full disclosure, Pinhole Press also serves as technical demonstrator of one of the software products of Mohawk Fine Papers.  Hard as it is to imagine,  I work for a paper mill that not only produces some of the finest paper used around the world but also creates incredibly brilliant and elegant software - software primarily used professional photographers.  Mohawk has chosen to use Pinhole Press to support charitable/non profit organizations in which our employees participate --  like the Gore Ski Club.  In the mean time, Mohawk gets to vigorously exercise and to demonstrate the software to the trade.  We also get to make really well crafted, cool stuff.... all made in the USA and the paper is manufactured 100% by windpower.)

Gore is getting ready!

Hello everyone,

As of last night the crew at Gore has started the 2010/2011 snowmaking season. The weather looks great for snowmaking the next few days and if Mother Nature cooperates I expect the mountain to open next Friday November 26th. Assuming this does happen, the Gore NYSEF office will be open next Friday – Sunday to hand out season passes.

We will have your athletes pass in our office as long as you did not request a new pass photo. If you did request a new pass photo you will need to go to a ticket sellers desk and have that photo taken before the mountain will print your pass.

Regular season training is scheduled to begin Saturday December 4th at 8:30 am. On both Saturday December 4th and Sunday December 5th training will end at noon so we can conduct our annual staff meetings in the afternoon.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone soon!

Ski Camp at Copper

To:        NYSEF/ Northwood Friends

From:     Guy Middleton

Re:        Open Copper, Colorado - Fall 2010 - SHORT CAMP

Date:        August 27, 2010

This year, we will again be offering a short prep camp at Copper Mt., Colorado in conjunction with our full length camp. The purpose of this camp is for JII and JIIIs who are looking to get on snow early to work on technical skills and develop tactical gate skills but cannot afford to miss school for the entire full length Colorado Camp.

Camp Details:

Location: Copper Mountain, Colorado

Dates: November 17-23, 2010

Tentative Travel Plans : Depart Northwood the morning of Nov 17 with Northwood Staff. Tentative flights will depart in the late morning of Nov 17 arriving in Denver, Colorado and return from Denver to Albany the evening of Nov 23rd.

If you want to make other airfare plans, you must arrive and depart Denver, Co. at approximately the same time as our group. If you do make your own flight plans, we will deduct the cost of our flight, $400.00 from your total cost. Northwood School cannot be responsible for athletes who fly separately from the group. If you plan on purchasing your own flight, please wait until we have confirmed our exact flights with you. Then send me a copy of your flight itinerary once you have made your reservation.

Estimated Cost: $1,600 - Includes flight, lodging, ground transportation, baggage fee, breakfast, lift tickets (week- end fast pass), and training space fees. The fee does not include lunch or dinner. Athletes can prepare meals in the condo or walk into town below the condos.

Additional Costs: Additional airline baggage fees greater than 2 bags and overweight fees; lunch and dinners. Lunch and dinners should be a minimal cost since we will have condo units with full kitchens. The athletes can prepare their own meals for lunch and dinner or go out to eat.

Staff: Guy Middleton, Northwood Program Director; Jim Johnston, NYSEF JIII Head Coach; John Norton, NYSEF Head Women's coach; Royce Van Evera, NYSEF Head Men's Coach; Marcy Fagan, Northwood tutor/coach; and other coaches TBD.

Focus: 6 full days on snow - Full Length GS and SL training, drills as well as directed free-skiing. Dartfish video analysis and timing. Due to the altitude and the longer training block, it is important for the athlete to be physically ready to meet these demands. Daily study hall sessions will be a component of this camp.

Accommodations: Condos at the base of Copper Mountain

The deadlines and payment schedule is as follows:

  • September 10th Friday: Deposit of $1,000 payable to Northwood School, PLUS:

Open House This Weekend Sunday September 12, 2010

Here's is the plan for the NYSEF Open House :

The NYSEF/Gore Open House will run from 10 am to 4 pm, on Sept 12. It will be held at the Tannery Pond Community Center.  It is on Main Street, across from the Town Hall/Library, in North Creek.

This is a new format for getting information out and letting you visit with old friends in a more relaxed atmosphere. The plan is for the coaches to be available to answer any questions you may have and gather information on equipment. Sports Page will be giving a 2 part presentation on equipment and services. Gary Higley's (owner of Sports Page) presentation will begin at noon and run until 2. The first part will be a discussion on equipment and services for JI/JII and JIII's and the second part will be for JIV and JV's. You can visit coaches at anytime throughout the day.  And get race schedules and sign up for NYSEF. It should be noted that Sports Page will not be having a racer night this year, but will be offering racer prices for an extended time period.

The Gore Ski Club will be at the Open House so every family could sign up and pay your annual dues early.

If you can't be at the Open House, don't forget to join USSA on-line at
www.ussa.org. If you are a JIV or older race family, you can register for NYSSRA and find your race schedule on-line at
www.nyssra.org.  And the Gore Ski Club membership form will be available on their website www.goreskiclub.org with directions for mailing to the club secretary on the bottom of the form.

We will once again be going to Monte-Sainte-Anne in Canada for early season training. This is a great opportunity to allow you to get a jump on the season. We expect this camp to fill quickly this year, so if there is interest, get your name on the sign-up list. More details will be forth coming, but tentative dates are November 19-24, 2010. This trip is usually for 2nd year JIVs and older.

Northwood has also extended an invitation to their fall camp at Copper, CO for a FEW athletes. Look for information regarding this camp.

Hope to see everyone on the 12th

Congratulations

Congratulations to all our Athletes who competed at the J3 States this past weekend. Everyone did a great job, you should all be proud of your performance!

This weekend the Eastern Kandahar Race comes to Gore. Good luck to all our J3, 4 & 5's this is sure to be a great fun filled event.

Kandahar This Weekend!!

Dear Gore Ski Mountain Ski Club members and want-to-be members:

It’s snowing as I write this. YEAH!! FINALLY!!!

As you know this weekend is KANDAHAR!! We’re looking forward to 2 days of some great skiing, great racing, and great fun!! Maybe we'll have some powder?! If you don’t know the history of the Kandahar, it’s posted in the NYSEF training center, straight in from the entry doors on the bulletin board. It can also be found on NYSSRA’s website under the Qualifiers & Teams blue tab across the top.

Calling all bakers or wanna-be bakers -- we’re doing a fundraiser bake sale on Saturday morning. Please make/bring something yummy to sell during bib pick-up in the Training Center. Registration starts at 7:30AM, so please bring your treats over as early as possible. Whatever you bring, please package them so we can sell them each for 25 cents or 50 cents. Suggestions: Muffins, donuts, cupcakes, brownies, cookies, rice krispie treats, trail mix, muddy-buddy mix, etc… If it has nuts in it, please label it. The club will have coffee/tea/hot chocolate available in the morning to go with!!

We have a number of volunteers registered to help with all the activities. Both days we’ll have stuff for sale - bake sale items on Saturday and lunch tickets, raffle tickets, NYSSRA t-shirts, fleece hats & bandanas. Saturday afternoon we’ll be humming (dancing?) tunes, scooping ice cream, shoveling popcorn, and pouring drinks (the non-alcoholic type).

If you have any Gore Race Team logo clothing, please wear it. This will help if any visitors have questions, they’ll know who the “local” people are. Plus, it’ll show support for our team!!

We also need a few volunteers yet for the races. Please consider gate keeping on either day. You’ll get a close up view of the race! Thanks in advance!

This weekend Olympic Gold and Silver Medalist, World Cup Champion, seven-time National Champion, member of the United States Ski Hall of Fame – Diann Roffe, will add gold medal luster to the always successful Gore Mountain JIV Speed Camp.

Diann is a native New York skier from Brantling Mountain and is an Olympic Gold Medal winner at Lillehammer in Super G. Diann is uniquely qualified to share her solid fundamentals and world beating tactics with our JIVs and is excited to return to Gore Mountain.

The club is planning a "meet and greet" time with her immediately after training on Saturday, 1/30, afternoon. ALL parents and racers are welcome to come by the training center, have a snack, bring your camera and something to autograph. See attachment.

For JVs and JVIs: Save the date -- Sunday, March 14th will be the annual picnic and awards.

For JIVs and up: Save the date -- Saturday evening, March 27th will be the annual banquet at The Lodge On Echo Lake in Warrensburg.

Kathie Donohue is working on putting the finishing touches on the club directory, so if you want your family included, please join ASAP. I've attached the membership form. Please mail it to her (her address is on the bottom of the form) or give it & your dues to one of the club officers. Remember -- to attend the banquet on 3/27, you need to be a member...

We'd also like to express our condolances to Tanya Gaechter and her family. Her father passed away Monday night. For those who don't know Tanya, she works in the NYSEF office as our race/office coordinator. Bud Yablonsky, her brother, and his family are emeritus members of the club. Their Dad's obituary can be found here: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/northjersey/obituary.aspx?n=michael-d-yablonsky&pid=138986548
Please note that the obituary incorrectly notes the funeral mass at 9 AM on Saturday. It is going to be at 10 AM.

Finally, on Tuesday this week, the Olympic Alpine Team was announced. Andrew Weibrecht (Whiteface NYSEF) made the team! For more details see http://www.usskiteam.com/alpine/news?storyId=2382

Natural Forces

Well, it has been a while since my last post and I wanted to catch up with you all. As I sit here and watch another winter storm go by us; like an eighteen wheeler passing you on your way to work leaving just enough snow to use your wipers once or twice. Boy we sure did have some struggles over the holiday, rain on the first weekend and winds so strong on the last weekend it was blowing the horns off the deer! Now, don't mistake what I'm saying, it's not all bad, sure we really could use some snow and yes we can spend our idle hours coming up with ways to change the weather patterns. One thought I had was to make a really nice lake, heck lets make it a great lake over on the other side of Gore so we could start getting some of that lake effect snow, or if I can find the time to finish my experiment with plate tectonics, I'm pretty sure that something will change, I'm just not sure what at this point. The bottom line though, we just can't change the natural forces.

So, it really was a good holiday period. Everyone got plenty of skiing in, and overall everyone is skiing pretty well. It's great to have our group of college alumni in town during the holidays; they add an exciting element to the program. A big thank you goes out to those folks and an invite to keep coming back. This coming weekend officially marks the start of the racing season. The Hovey on Saturday, the J3's are at Whiteface Sunday and the J1 2's race at Gore on Saturday and West on Sunday. As you head out to these events please keep in mind that there have been some rule changes that everyone should be aware of. The first is in regard to gate keeping and or proper gate passage. This is only in regards to Slalom, but if you are an athlete racing or a volunteer gate keeper you should brush up and be familiar with these changes. The second is not a new rule but a reminder that only athletes and coaches/team captains are allowed on the race hill. That means that parents should not be inspecting with their athletes.

I guess I had better get out side and give Twister a ski. Yes, that's right Twister; it's almost ready to open. Burnt Ridge should open as well this weekend, I'll see you on Echo!
